The prefix "anti" means against or to oppose. What exactly do antioxidants oppose?

Many processes in the body require oxygen. Unfortunately, oxygen can create harmful side effects, or oxidant substances, which cause cell damage and lead to chronic disease.

Oxidants are called free radicals and can be introduced through external sources such as exposure to the sun or pollution. Stress and  unhealthy lifestyles can also cause oxidation in the body.

Like Oxidation creates rust on metal , causing a breakdown, oxidation inside the body causes a breakdown of cells. Free radicals produced by this breakdown attack healthy cells which weaken the immune system, eyes, heart, joints and many other organs in the body. Odxidants allow cronic conditions to set up in the body

Antioxidants bind together with these harmful molecules, decreasing their destructive power and can help repair damage already sustained by cells.

Some antioxidants are produced by the body such as SOD and glutathione, but most antioxidant agents are found in super fruits and plants.  Common antioxidants found in fruits and plants, especially dark green leafy plants are, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene.
